FAQs

What is a data transfer rate?

A data transfer rate (or bandwidth) refers to how much data can be transmitted per second over a network or internet connection. Common units include bps, Kbps, Mbps, and Gbps.

Why do some ISPs advertise in Mbps instead of MBps?

Internet Service Providers typically use Megabits per second (Mbps) because the number appears larger. For example, 100 Mbps sounds faster than 12.5 MBps, even though they represent the same speed.

What’s the difference between SI and IEC units in data transfer?

SI units (Decimal): Use powers of 10. For example, 1 Megabit = 1,000,000 bits.
IEC units (Binary): Use powers of 2. For example, 1 Mebibit = 1,048,576 bits.
Although IEC units are more technically accurate in computing, many systems (including Windows) label binary values using SI prefixes (e.g., calling 1024 KB = 1 MB, which is technically incorrect).
This converter clearly separates SI and IEC formats so you can see the exact numbers in both systems.
